Vintage Motorcycle News - Douglas edition
« on: 15 Apr 2022 at 08:32 »
Pat Castel is a member of a small vintage motorcycle club located in Ottawa, Canada. He also created and is the editor of a motorcycle newsletter called "Vintage Motorcycle News".

The "newsletter" is published quarterly and is really more like an online magazine or ezine. Each quarter, the newsletter focuses on a particular topic and the latest Spring 2022 issue, features Douglas motorcycles.

Pat provided a short history of how the newsletter began.
Quote from: Pat Castel
Our club started a few years ago when for some reasons unknown to us, four of us riding different vintage brands, decided to have lunch in a small countryside restaurant without even knowing each other.
That day, those four riders decided to meet again on regular basis without the rigid structure of an “official club”.
As time went by, others started to join the group. We are about 20 now, from different backgrounds and style of life.

A year ago when I joined the group, I brought with me my computer knowledge and my liking for newsletters.
Since we were not a real club, I created Vintage Motorcycle News (VMN), a link between the riders that would tell the story of the brands we were riding.

Four issues per year, matching the seasons going by… with a twist, every year when Fall arrive, that edition is about a motorcycle topic that nobody has heard about or seen on the road. This year it was the Steampunk culture, last year it was the radial engine.

Of course, it did not take long before people from everywhere heard about my little newsletter. Our riders being active on social media, chat groups and more, started to talk about it and requests from everywhere started to show in my mailbox asking for copies of it.

I now share VMN with clubs from around the world and of course, anecdotes, stories and photos are now also from around the world.
Here in Canada, we do not have many Douglas on the road and this is why I was looking for your help

Pat has kindly made the latest issue featuring Douglas, plus three back issues, available for us to read.
You can download them to your PC using Right click > Save as... and then read them using your PDF file viewer.

Interesting read. In 2003 Herbert Wagner published a very carefully researched book about the early days at Harley-Davidson called, "At the Creation: Myth, Reality, and the Origin of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle, 1901-1909". HD have a lot invested in their "born in 1903" creation myth, so the same story is told over and over.

Anyway, I glanced at the very misleading origin story in the mag, and then enjoyed re-reading "At the Creation"!
