Lets start at the top.
What does the gear lever in the gate do when this happens ?

So thats jumping out of 3rd ?

Its possibly that the gear lever adjustment isn't allowing it sufficient engagement into 3rd.
You can adjust the rods to the gear lever just a shade to push it further into gear before
the lever is fully home in the gate. It may not need much.
Watch that this doesn't affect 2nd or 1st.

There is nothing much inside the box that controls this.
So its well worth persisting/trying with the adjustment.
And finding that sweet spot.

I don't actually remember !

Was just looking at a spare gearbox.
Might take a refresher course, and have a look inside.
(its condition is unknown).

Have you tried the linkage adjustment though

Having met someones Norton, that required but a
minor adjustment to the rods to transform it.

And another bike that I have, that had the linkage joints worn oval.
So riding it must have cumulatively been a challenge ?

Its a mistake to overlook the obvious ?

Hi Jim F
Early platform mount boxes have the detents on the selector input shaft, later clamp on boxes have the detents on the input shaft.

What would allow the detents to not hold in 3rd ?
Other than not being fully engaged.

Worn (rounded) edges on the engagement dogs.

Hi All, so could the jumping out be a broken detent spring or worn ball bearing

If you have removed any slack out of the gear change rod and levers, and it is still jumping out of top gear, I concur with Eddie that the problem is likely worn dogs on the gears. I had this issue with my 1914 3 1/2HP. I got the dogs undercut and it was all good after that.

Cheers, Graeme

Can we find a pic of what undercut dogs may look like ?

Hi Jim,

please have a look at the attached pic of a 350 EW gear cluster.

The best thing would be to strip the gearbox and check the dogs for condition. If you find badly rounded dogs at the spot indicated by red arrows on the left, this is the reason for your problem and there is probably not much to do than to have these dogs re-ground by a competent machinist.

The dogs of the 2nd gear wheel on the shaft, see arrow in the middle are also prone to wear.  They need to be a bit rounded at their ends to facilitate selecting 2nd gear, but should be parallel in the middle.

First thing, as stated before, is to make sure that the dogs of the 3rd gear wheels are fully engaged. You can check that by taking one of the clevis pins out of the linkage while 3rd gear is engaged and look if you can move the part of the linkage that goes to the gearbox any further. If so, try to adjust.

If this cures 3rd gear but you find that now 2nd gear has a tendency to jump out it might be the fault of all the clevis joints having too much play. The obvious cure is to bore or ream them out and make oversize pins.

If this does not help, you will need to strip the gearbox to investigate further.

Cheers
Wilfried
