S6 cams
« on: 24 Oct 2022 at 05:04 »
Hi
Last hope really. Need a set of cams for an S6, not sure if they're the same as S5. Possibly.
Also a sump.

Murray,

I have some cams, but not sure if I have spare cam & gear assembly. It is the same part number for the S5, S6, and T6. I think all the spare sumps have been sold. I'm in Pennsylvania, USA, so if you cannot find anything more local, let me know. At least with just the cams, the postage will be minimal. Need to get up on the mezzanine in the shed and check the spares situation.

Thanks for your response Doug. Pretty sure cam and gear are one assembly, from what I can see in my drawings. I'd be pleased if you find them and are willing to sell.

Pretty sure my pile of bits says otherwise!  :)  It is actually going to take me a day or so to get out there and get the bin of parts out.

Murry,

Well some good news and bad news.

The good news is my memory is intact enough to recall the cam and the gear are separate components, pressed together. The bad news is I failed to remember I only have one inlet can and the rest are exhaust! That is just the way the basket case came to me.

The exhaust cams are on the left and the inlet on the right. It would seem that the gear is unique too, with the inlet gear being recessed on both faces.

I suppose one could anneal, re-profile, and re-harden an exhaust cam into an inlet. the later has a narrower lobe and drawings for the cam profiles do exist. But it would be a lot of work.

There are some other gears which I presume are magneto, but I have yet to check into if the S6 and derivatives used a separate hub, as these do not have a tapered bore. But I do not know what else they could possibly be. They have the same tooth count as the cam gears which could be likewise be turned into cam gears; but honestly the teeth on all of these are bruised and knackered.

So I do not know that what I have helps much, since I still need to pick out the best inlet and exhaust combination from this lot for my '32 Greyhound.

I do have an extra sump. but it is just the bare sump. I only have one oil pump for my project. And at 9lbs (4kg) it would be a heavy thing to post to Australia.

Having now sourced a sump and some cam, gears I'm looking for the light house type oil pump that goes with these models. I'm hoping someone has one that they would like to sell. I would need the drive worm that attaches to the exhaust cam as well.

Any hope?

Hello Doug

I am currently repairing a 600㏄.E31 engine.

The cam gear teeth are heavily worn and I am having trouble repairing them.
I would like to know if the cam gear you have is available.

Is it available for sale?

More to this project I have a question about a part called an oil sump baffle 11253 in my photocopied book. Could someone tell me exactly it's purpose, what its made from and is it necessary? A photo would be good. Also some info on the breather body assemble and how it fits to the inlet cam gear. Again a photo would be good. I have attached a pic of the drawing.
