T35 Head Lamp Change
« on: 25 Nov 2021 at 15:11 »
Hi,

I think there was on the T35 models a change of the head lamp type from MU42 to SS700?
Is there someone, who knows when (and why) it was?

The Lucas Bible, lamps section P716/94 lists -

Douglas 350cc Twin used the DU42 for 1947
Douglas 350cc Twin used the MU42 for 1948/49
Douglas 350cc Twin used the SSU700P for 1950

Lamps back then changed from 6" and 8" versions to all being 7" as the SSU700P.
(except for lightweight bikes).
And the rim retaining methods changed, a few times.
Also the ammeter had a few versions.
As did regulators and tail light lamps.

Folks may call Lucas the Prince of Darkness, but in fact stuff was always evolving and changing.
Even if progress was a little glacial - but the alternator was about to become common,
positive earth would appear, etc etc.
Hopethishelps.

Hi Ron,

thanks for your informations.
Is the SS700p the 7" lamp with the extra parking light underneath?

The SSU700P appeared for 1950.
No parking light underneath.

That didn't appear until 1954. (?)
My Lucas Manual doesn't cover that year (someone didn't file the updates ?),
so I don't have what the number is on that lamp.
And the paint is too thick on my lamp to read it - I'll work on it.

Edit. It looks like the lamp with the underslung pilot light is SSU700P/1
Can anyone confirm that 1954 date ?
Cheers.

Hi Ron,

thanks for the response. My Douglas is a 1951 model, so I will find a 7" Lucas lamp in my spares (with no seperate parking light).
I can confirm the appear of 1954 for the SS700P/1 lamp.
I had a BSA B31, a early swinging arm model, stamped 17.11.1953 on the engine - so a 1954 model - with that type of SS700P/1 lamp.
