2 3/4 valves
« on: 23 May 2021 at 20:38 »
An exhaust valve head broke off today necessitating an AA recovery. Does anyone know if the club (or anyone else) stocks valves, springs, copper sealing gaskets and how to get hold of them? Hoping to get back on the road as soon as possible. It's my wife's bike and she's not best pleased that I broke it.

Why not email the pre-war spares Secretary direct. His email address is prewar.doug@btinternet.co

Aha! There was no mention of an email address in the New Conrod. I'll do that now. Many thanks.

Yes you are quite correct and I had the same problem. I have been in contact with the Conrod Editor to make sure both the pre and post war spares email addresses are included on page 2 in the future.

Sorry Black Sheep - I left the "m" off the email address. It should read prewar.doug@btinternet.com

No worries - I guessed that there should have been an m there. Just hoping to hear back soon.

The pre-war spares lists long or short valves for the 2 3/4 HP models. How do I tell which is the correct length for 1913?

Hi All
The short valves are for inlet & long for the exhaust, should be the same from 1913 to 1925. the Email addresses for both spares secretaries were listed on page 3 of the Jan-Feb edition of The New Conrod cliub magazine.

So far one inlet valve extracted overall length 85mm. Struggling to get the valve stem out of the broken exhaust valve - doesn't want to slide through the valve cap despite the pin being removed.
Thanks for the information. I can now go and place my order. :D

Discovered that Briggs and Stratton make a very neat valve spring compressor for side valves. Could have been made for the 2 3/4.

Or is this a generic one, and B&S makes their own one.

You have a very lucky wife, Mr Sheep!

I wonder if the bike could talk, would it tell us about the Herbert Robinson, Cambridge, footboards? Nice touch. The attached snippet is from the Motor Cycle, July 1922.

That's amazing - I had never really given though to the footboards. My late father in law was the bike's second owner. As you can see, it's a Norfolk registration and has stayed in Norfolk until my wife inherited it when it came North. My father in law never rode it - he was a collector - but one of his friends rode it in the Banbury a couple of times. He sold his rather fabulous collection to Verrals in the 1970s but they missed a couple of bikes in a separate shed - including the Douglas. Phew!
