Cast alloy Silencer - Endeavour
« on: 07 Mar 2021 at 16:51 »
Does anyone have surplus a cast alloy silencer (see photo): I only have one for my Endeavour project but need the second.  They were formerly available from the Club spares but no longer...
Regards, George

Hi George,
Can't help with a silencer but have sent some photos to be added to this post which could help you.

Thanks Tony, that is helpful.  I've also managed to get a copy of Pitmans 5th edition Book of the Douglas which has some information.  I find it incredible that Douglas did not produce a handbook and/or none survived. The 29 bikes on the Register represents a pretty good survival rate for the model itself.

As for the alloy silencer, I'm now wondering who in the club organised their casting, which foundry did it and where the patterns might now be....?

The Club probably holds the patterns for these cast alloy silencers. I think they were first reproduced back in the early 70's (when Barry Bailey was prewar spares secretary) and were available in 2 sizes. In recent years, tighter restrictions regarding the control of hazardous waste, etc. has led to the demise of a lot of the small casting companies that the club used for their small batch work, resulting in a hold up with supplies. I know the committee are trying to clear the backlog as the new spares secretaries settle in and find their feet.

   Regards,
                  Eddie.

Afternoon George.
Sorry I cannot help with the alloy silencer, but if you do go down the having some cast route, I am also interested in a pair. I did enquire at a local foundry a while back but the time and cost of producing the patterns made them an unattractive option unless I ordered 1000 pieces.
There seems to be two types fitted to the Endeavour the early ones seem to have the straight pipe as in your picture, the later ones  have the fishtail addition.
I rebuilt my Endeavour starting three years ago and as you say information is scarce to none existing. I used this Calendar picture to help me.
Regards
Steve

Thanks Eddie and Steve.  I have been corresponding with Alan, running the Pre-War Spares; it appears that the Club does still have the patterns for this silencer (and the fishtail).  I shall pursue whether it is viable to get some cast.
