S6 sparking problem

 My s6 mag has a spark out of the engine but no spark when fitted into engine! Any ideas?

Do you have a kill switch, and is it connected? It might be permanently on if the wire to it is trapped somewhere. presumably the mag is actually rotating, and timed to the right cylinder?

Hi Martin,
                Have you got the correct rotation magneto? On the S/T6, the magneto turns in the opposite direction to the crankshaft. With the mag off the engine, you could be turning it in the wrong direction when you obtain a spark.

Yes I have the correct rotation and turn it the correct way when out of the engine!

Have you got a good electrical connection between maggie and engine ?

I've heard of someone who had much difficulty especially with starting,
and he discovered that the maggie was sort-of insulated from the engine.
A simple wire between the two improved things, muchly.

Is bolting the magneto down warping something, perhaps ?
Unlikely, but its a strange problem.

can I ask how you are rotating the mag when off the bike? by hand or with something like an electric drill? if you are using an electric drill then the speed of rotation on the bike may be slower and not result in a spark.

I'm not sure if this is true for magnetos, but I have experienced ignition systems on Italian bikes (Moto Morini, electronic ignition) that will spark happily with the plugs out, but not spark under compression. Maybe the maggy needs some attention
