Dragonfly engine running in.
« on: 13 Jan 2021 at 19:21 »
Hi all hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so i will be at last be in a position to start my Dragonfly for the first time since a complete engine rebuild, so i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice for running my engine in.
i have heard that i might have to put some running in oil into the engine for a couple of hundred miles the replace it with the correct oil is this right ?.

Regards kevin..

If you ask 1000 folks that question, you'd probably get 1000 different answers.
And maybe 1001.

Gentle for the first 1000 miles in long spells was the instruction back then, and probably still applies today.
Since the fit and clearances and materials likely haven't changed one little bit.

With the proviso that sets of pistons rings I've bought over the years (not Dragonfly)
have often included the instructions "give it some quick brief bursts of full throttle"
early in its life. To seat the piston rings in properly..

I'd be a little wary of that 'running in oil'.
Factory supplied new bikes would have had the best ?
Maybe not synthetic oil to begin with though, if you must.

Keep away from any oil that has friction modifiers, that’s most high grade oils today.
OK to use after the engine is run in.
Definitely short bursts of power to bed in the rings.

You should be aware this is an OIL THREAD (!!), and if you ask 1000 folks you will get 1000 different replies.

It is important to note though that the use of any oil inc modern oils is strictly on the proviso that your crank and cases
and oilways have been THOROUGHLY cleaned out and are scrupulously clean.
If you've seen the gunge and old spiders etc that you can sometimes find, you'll know why this comment is important.
