M32 silencer baffles - or not?
« on: 20 Nov 2020 at 13:20 »
My M32 has come with, I guess, the period silencer and pipes. The pipe pushes nicely into the silencer body, but there is nothing resembling a baffle inside the silencer at all. The pipe has been cut, perhaps to remove a baffle tube?

Should there be anything on the end of the pipe, or is it as it should be?

Velocettes are very sensitive to the details of the silencer baffle as I am well aware, so feel I ought to get something together for the Douglas - even if only to keep the noise down a bit!

Any views gratefully received
Many thanks
Doug

Doug,
The S6 has a similar silencer, and the exhaust pipe extends about 2/3rds of the way into the silencer. The pipe is blanked off with a 'washer' with about a 1/4" dia hole - the pipe is then slotted down one side with slots 1/8" wide set at about 60 degrees to the pipe. (I'll see if I can find a photo of the pipe).

   Regards,
                 Eddie.

Thanks Eddie.

Velos use this thing, which is inside another larger diameter louvred tube, blanked off at the end but with a 1/4 hole as you describe, so it might be possible to utilise one of these with some mods.

Cheers for now

Doug

Have you tried it as is ?

Some of those bottle type mufflers with fishtailly things are surprising effective at quietening things down.

My S6 has just a plain pipe going a short way into the unbaffled original silencer - it isn't offensively loud
