Model Z carburettor

Hi there could any body tell me which make and model carb was fitted to the 34 Model Z, checking through the boxes that hold supposedly an entire bike the carb seems to be missing.

Douglas just say in the Z/Z1 brochure "Douglas - specially made to suit the horizontally opposed  twin-cylinder engine." They show Douglas' own barrel carburetor, a rather crude instrument when it comes to atomization of fuel. I have one fitted to my ohv OW1. I suspect, like the 1934-35 ohv models, the Z/Z1 could also be had with the updraft Amal made specifically for Douglas. These were used on the S6 of which the Z and Z1 are a direct descendant. I am pretty sure that I have seen other Z/Z1 (not that there are many about) with this carburetor.

Thanks for that very useful. I keep hearing about the Z models being rare but didn't realise just how rare when I bought a machine that had been dismantled and stored for the last 40years. Oh well should keep me busy for quite some time.

Could be worse, you might have been restoring an Ascot-Pullin! At least with the Z, some of the parts were shared or similar to that used on the other 1934-35 models. In the case of the updraft Amal, you might find one since they were used on the T6/S5/S6 models for late 1929 on. The Douglas barrel carb might prove a little more difficult. If you really get stuck, I did make a full set of drawings for that if you want to have a go making from scratch.

Can you go back to the seller and enquire if the carb missed being boxed up with the rest.
