Identify engine on ebay

Just wondering which model this engine is & what it was likely fitted to?
The seller seems to think its a motorcycle engine but it looks more like an industrial type.

It's big and water cooled - I think it's a Williamson engine, made in the Douglas works

As it has 'Douglas' cast into the crankcase, I think it may be from the 1914 Douglas car. Evidently, those engines were based on the 8hp Williamson engine.

Interesting, in those pictures of the air-cooled Williamson you can clearly see The Douglas cast into the crankcase

I am still leaning toward it being a car engine - there is no sprocket on the back of the flywheel - instead, 3 stud holes near the centre on the outside of the flywheel (for an in-line coupling to a gearbox??).

Most likely 1912-1914? Some research would be required for a positive date.

The Best Twin has a chapter on the Douglas motor cars, where Jeff Clew talks about prototype cars in late 1912 using the Williamson engine. The final vehicle (for the 1914 season) used the Williamson-style engine but with the gearbox casing cast integrally with the crankcase, so the engine is not from a production car. Maybe prototype car as Eddie suggests, maybe Williamson mc, or maybe Douglas/Williamson engine used for something entirely different. I wouldn't rule out wartime application. Most interesting!

Well done. I think its from a car - mainly due to the flywheel drive pins (to a clutch and gearbox?)I would have loved to have attempted the recreation of the Mawer Brooklands racer!

Managed to find some missing parts, Inlet, water manifolds & original carburettor.
Also had conformation from a chap in the Netherlands (who owns 4 Williamsons) that the engine originated from a 1914 Williamson motorcycle, with engine number 537.
This is identified by the grooves in the bottom of the crankcases, where the frame tubes located, & apparently the stationary engine cases are flat.

Unrelated, also found this original 2 3/4 Marconi gen set, which is in amazing condition, & appears to have had little use.

Will be using this engine in TS rebuild.
