My great grandfathers Douglas motorcycles.
« on: 12 Apr 2020 at 20:25 »
Hi. New to this forum, but hope someone might help identify my great grandfathers motorcycles please? Maybe they are still around, that would be amazing! Please see the attachments.

I have identified the years of registration and area from the bikes registration letters. Both bikes were registered in the London area, which is where my great grandfather lived. (Islington)

The older photo was taken in 1925 but the bike was registered in 1922. Could this be the 6hp combo that came out that year?

The newer bike was registered in 1930, but the photograph is dated 1944 and was taken in Wray Crescent, Tollington, London. My guess is it’s possibly a T6?

Any thoughts, info or help much appreciated.

Thanks and regards Paul.

Hi Paul
The earlier one is a 4HP model, and quite likely of 1922 manufacture if that is when it was registered. The later one is indeed a T6.
The LDMCC records may show if the machines still exist
Cheers, Graeme

G’day Graeme. Thanks for the info.

I didn’t know about the LDMCC, being new to all this. I will contact them and see if they can help too. Good stuff Graeme and thanks.

Regards Paul.

Having had a look at the DVLA’s tax checker database I’m afraid neither of those two registration numbers appear.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the bikes don’t exist anymore only that they have not been taxed (or SORN’d) with those numbers since the DVLA computerised their records.
The machine registrar at the LDMCC is an excellent next step.

Thanks DJS.

I have contacted LDMCC I and am awaiting their reply. I will keep the forum updated on progress.

Just imagine owning one of these bikes today, but having a photograph of a previous owner from nearly 100 years ago. Wouldn’t that be a fantastic addition to the bike?
