EW Gearbox and Crankshaft Bearings
« on: 05 Jul 2018 at 20:14 »
Can anyone help I am replacing the bearings in my EW gearbox and crankshaft.
My main problem is I need to
remove the kickstart ratchet is it screwed to the mainshaft, there is no
sign of keys, if so is it a right or left hand thread ?
Regarding the bearings they are SKF 6203 the outer race is designated 03
would replacements be C3 or are standard bearings ok.

I am also asking the same question regarding the crankshaft bearing timeing side
should I use a FAG 98305-c3 for the drive side.

I have not been able to locate a 62x30x21mm
wide bearing (available ones have a wider centre)the nearest is 20mm (SKF 4206ATN9)I will have to
use a spacer unless anyone knows a UK supplier.

Hi Keith,

I have recently put in new bearings in my 1930 350cc H3 engine (should be the same size of crankshaft / crank house:

62206 (double row ball bearing, 30x62x20 + shim) at drive side

98305/c3 (25x62x12) at timing side

I think it is no mistake to use a C3.

Hi Ronald and Micheal
Thanks for your replies. I have contacted Hendersons bearings for more information for the 415481 SKF  bearing.
It does seem strange to find such an early British bike with metric bearings.
Thanks again Regards Keith

Keith,

Even back in the day the 30x62x21 was going obsolete. The SKF bearing list for Douglas' covering up to 1931 specified a 20mm wide unit and a 1mm shim for the outer race. SKF recomended a double row ball, self-aligning bearing. Today we use a double row roller, self-aligning. Initially the Continent lead in ball bearing design (Blin), so not surprising metric dimension became the norm. However Douglas did use a mix of metric and imperial sizes.

The kick start ratchet is threaded on, such that it is tightened when used. There should be some drilled holes in the face for a special peg spanner, if I remember correctly.
