Is it possible to buy a solid state voltage regulator for the MK5?

Yes,

you must take care for positiv or negativ earth of your dynamo.
You can change it on the dynamo.

I add a photo of the voltage control (neg. earth) of my MK1, I think it is a nice place to fix it in between the tank bracket.

You can get ones that will fit into the original regulator casing which will keep some "originality" to your machine. Just watch the polarity.
How about this one?

That looks for all the world like a rebadged AO Services item (VReg2?)  and if it is then beware they have a 2A discharge below about 30MPH in top. Not rated at all.
