Mk5 front brake
« on: 28 Nov 2017 at 07:23 »
I have read on this forum about improving the front brake on a mk5 by machining the shell bearing axle hole by increasing its size by .025”, my question is do you also have to remove this amount also from the large 3” abutment washer that sits on the outside of the brake plate as without doing this I cannot see how the brake plate will be allowed to centralise.

You shouldn't need to, Colin. The shell bearing was originally a neat fit in the brakeplate, whereas the facing washer normally has a reasonable amount of clearance around it.

Thanks for this reply Eddie ,my facing washer is a very snug fit in the back plate and on the axle that was why I thought there must be some sort of clearance required ,I think the facing washer is the original as it has the correct coliur paint on it which is well worn so looks to be old
