Electric light system for a CW
« on: 25 Mar 2017 at 06:01 »
Hi all, Quite a while ago I acquired a timing cover for a 2&3/4 HP motor which has the gear to drive a generator. I'm planning to put together an electric light CW.

Does anyone have any information on the generator setup. What type/ model? How it was mounted? How was the battery mounted? Photos or pictures from period brochures would be a great help if you have any.

Of course if you have the correct electrical parts and are willing to sell them I am very interested. I have almost all of the rest of the bike.

Thanks. Ian.

Hi Ian,

Powell and Hamner for the mid 1920s - later systems were BTH. https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index.php?topic=3020.msg11096#msg11096

I think there is a P&H motorcycle headlamp on ebay right now? The generators are around, but the switchbox is very rare indeed.

Cheers

Leon

Thanks Leon,

The photo posted by Doug on that thread is especially useful. Showing where the components are placed. I'll watch that headlight on eBay closely.

Thanks again Leon. Looks like I have a headlight on the way soon.

If anyone comes across other P&H electric light system components please remember me and post to this thread.

Let me check - I might still have a pair of Douglas/P&H head lamp brackets.

I now have quite a nice Powel and Hamner headlight. Thank you Leon for the heads up.

I'm very interested in the headlight brackets Leon. I'll send a p.m.

If anyone stumbles across any other components pleas let me know.

Hi Leon,

Did you get a chance to look for some headlight brackets?

Ian.

Yes I did! I have two sets that are slightly different - I have to do some homework to decide which pair I want for the TW. Photos to follow.

Give me a few days.

Hi Ian,

I'm pretty sure these are P&H lamp brackets. I thought I had two sets, but while one has tapers at the mounting ends - to suit the tapers in the Douglas head stem - the second set are just parallel and 1/2" diameter at the mounting end.

They might be something like BSA?

They're rather nice, but they would be tricky to modify. Check what arrangement you have for mounting on your bike.

Cheers

Leon

They look great Leon. I think I can come up with a way to turn a taper on them.

I'll PM you.
