seat mount
« on: 09 Nov 2016 at 19:34 »
Can anyone tell me which model and years had the support bracket for the front of the seat attached to the frame on 2/34 Douglas.
Thanks.

Hi Hibbo,

Well I guess someone might know, but I doubt there's a Douglas guru alive who could list all the models of the top of his/her head. I know I could find out - it would probably only take an hour or so to look at a bunch of catalogue illustrations (which are often wrong), parts lists, period photos and so on. We could come up with a reasonable list.

But do you really need to know ALL the models that used the saddle mount on the top bar? Or maybe there's an easier question you could ask. If it relates to a bike you're restoring, let us know the frame number.

Cheers

Leon

Thanks for your reply, I didn't realize it would be so complicated, it's a bike I'm interested in purchasing and the frame number is 58919 any information would be useful.

So we're talking 1923? https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/aa-files/html/identify-part1/veteran3.6.htm

I can't lay my hands on a 1923 catalogue at the moment, but all the 2 3/4 bikes in 1924 (TS, SW and CW) have the saddle spring mounted to the top tube.

Mr Google came up with this, labelled 1923. The 1924 catalogue uses the same illustration for the TS. I assume the other 1923 models used the same seat mount?

Thanks for that, the bike is registered and being sold as 1922 that's why I am interested in verifying what it actually is.
Thanks again

Hi Graham,

When the 1923 Douglas range was announced in The Motor Cycle, 16 November 1922, the seat spring attached to the top frame tube was listed as a new feature for the 2 3/4 h.p. models. The 1922 models had a pillar-mounted pan saddle.

I assume 58919 has the spring lug on the top tube?

Cheers

Hi Leon.
Yes it appears to be exactly as the drawing/picture you posted, I presume they introduced the next years model for the motorshow in the proceeding year. So is it possible a 1923 model would have been available in late 1922 ?
Thanks for your response.

There are two designs of top tube seat mount. From my records it looks as though all models up to 1924 i.e. TS, SW, CW, and OHV models OW and OB used the hooked saddle spring secured to the frame tube by two bolts. for 1925 and 1926 the CW certainly utilised a straight flat fronted spring held onto a platform on the top tube and clamped with a bridge piece with a nut and bolt each side of the frame tube. It would appear that the hooked spring and bolts were retained on the OB for 1925 but the clamp arrangement introduced on the OC for 1926. Chris.

Yep, exactly. It would be interesting to see if logbook or whatever can back this up. The other possibility is that things have been a bit mixed up some time down the track - it happens often for high-volume bikes like the 2 3/4 Douglas where a second-hand motor might be cheaper or more convenient than a rebore.

Cheers
