Looking for a "new" TS flat tank
« on: 06 Mar 2015 at 00:42 »
Hi all , I hope this finds you well. I am tossing up wether to rebuild my old tank or get a "new" flat tank for my TS . The original is battered badly and has a lot of rust . I do like the patina though. So the question is are there replica tanks available and the cost if so ? Thanks for your time
Regards Michael

Michael you are probably going to have to make a new tank yourself if you want new. Unsolder and use all the fittings off the old one. The fittings are all made of brass so they wont be rusty.

Back in the late 90s a friend up the coast from Sydney made up a number of tanks for me being Vet TS, TS, 4hp,OB, OC, and DT.

Guess he had had enough by the time he completed my order and asked me if he could pass on my old patterns to someone down south, probably Melbourne. If you can find out who that would be the way to go. It would be necessary to pass on all your tank fittings.

Cost per tank then was $230-$250.

Regards Alan

Thanks so much for your replies Ian and Alan. I'd love to find out who has those patterns.

I didn't use patterns to make my tank Michael, just wrapped paper around it and traced the shape, and it turned out spot on. No one knows it's not original unless I tell them. However I'm onto a lead wrt some tank making patterns. I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow.

Hi Michael
I have also made tanks by wrapping paper around to generate the main shapes. Another alternative is to unsolder the existing tank and then use each individual part, bases, oil and petrol separation wall, petrol surge baffles, front panel, radiussed reinforcements and main top and sides flattened out as accurate patterns. It is advisable to take some photos and measurements beforehand as well to ensure that you get the side radiuses in the correct place. There is nothing to lose in this procedure as you have to completely strip the tank anyway to recover the suspension castings, the filler necks, oil pump body, drain and petrol taps for use in the new tank.  Chris.
