Just below the timing cover you will find a cheese head screw - this blanks off the vertical oilway to the crankshaft. With the screw removed, push a drill into the oilway to make sure it isn't blocked with sludge. You can then screw in a fitting connected to a pressure gauge. If a gauge isn't available, put a drip tray under and leave the screw slightly loose. If the oil drips faster with the engine running, then the pump is working. If you have a gauge, don't be surprised if the pressure doesn't rise more than about 5 psi. The volume of oil is more important than the pressure. This low pressure is the reason for Mr Douglas recommending 3 thou clearance on the front main bearing bush - much less clearance and the low pressure oil can't push it's way out and lubricate the bush, with the result that it will probably nip up on the shaft!
