Hello,

Since purchasing my EW in 2006 I have used Castrol XXL40 with no problem.

The Penrite information leaflet is quite detailed and recommends for petrol engines the Shelsley range for the period 1920 to 1950
and the Classic range for the period 1950 to 1975.
I have been using Shelsey Medium ( for mimimum temps of 10 deg C) which equates to the old style SAE 40 rating.
The leaflet also clarifies the additives issue and why modern 10w/40w ratings are not really applicable..Hope this helps.
