For me, owning and riding old bikes is about keeping them as original as possible. Is there any real need to use electronic ignition?

Ah! for originality you cant beat kicking and kicking on a worn out magneto
(or spending money on a rebuild with a useless new capacitor)

Restoration is about making old things work correctly - or more precisely making them work as they once did. Luckily I have access to highly skilled people who can restore a magneto to as-new condition, and I've never had a problem with a magneto failing to provide a good-enough spark for an easy start. We could replace old technology with new in many places on an old bike, but for preference I keep things as close to original as possible. Otherwise where do we stop?

thats easy
we stop just before originality prevents its use (because of cost or  design) and just after modification allows us to enjoy them.
or do you run on original tyres?

Those of us who use our 'old' bikes just for the pleasure we get from them, are probably quite happy to tolerate their 'faults', and look upon those faults as 'character'. If we just wanted transport that runs like a sewing machine at the touch of a button and goes from A to B in the shortest time, we would buy a modern plastic rocket. I can see no point in ruining a good classic machine by fitting electronic ignition when the original ignition system can be refurbished at a fraction of the cost. Once reconditioned, a Lucas or BTH magneto will probably outlive the owner!

I hear what you say Eddie and I tend to agree, but I question the "a fraction of the cost" my Scott magneto rebuld cost more than a BT-H
I want the original feel forks frame tyres seat etc (as far as they are available)so I can ride the bike and have a good chance of enjoying the ride. The magneto or the carburettor need to work their originality are to some extent  incidental
NB originally I was replying to a question that had been ignored on the forum, For myself at the moment all my mags and carburettors on my 4 Dugli are original but if funds were lacking or repairs did not  improve the situation and alternatives were available I would not hesitate

Of course if the latest EU regulations on type approval come in we shall all be on plastic crutch rockets in the UK or in tin boxes
