Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

Hi, attached is photo of the clutch outer plate on an engine i'm rebuilding. Showing a lot of wear on the thrust disc. Is this usual? What is the cause?
cheers, Neil

eddie

Neil,
The ring of wear shown in the photo is caused by the pressed steel retaining ring on the clutch release standing proud of the thrust face and wearing into the tufnol disc. This may be the result of either the retaining ring being distorted or the thrust bearing itself being worn enough to let the thrust ring sit lower than the surrounding body. Providing you repair or replace the clutch release, this outer plate should be OK to re-use - that is, assuming the rivets are still tight. The clutch thrust actually sits inboard of the area of wear.
       Regards,
                     Eddie.

Thanks Eddie,

Unfortunately the retaining ring is rusted thru, and last time I asked there were none in club spares. I'll ask again! Seems a very flimsy item.

Cheers, Neil

chippy

Hi Neil, Are you going to the rally at Stow at the weekend, if so I have a used one you could look at. Regards Eric (Regalia sec).

NeilR

Hi Chippy, thanks for the offer but I don't have a road-going Douglas at the moment so not at the rally. Comp is dead with broken frame and the Mk is in about as many parts as there are.

cheers,

neil
