Valve Cotter Pins
« on: 22 Feb 2016 at 17:32 »
Evening all.
I'm at last in the final stages of my 2+3/4 engine rebuild and I need to make some new cotter pins.
The last material I used was obviously rubbish, as they were bent before I removed them and broke in the process.
Does anyone have a recommendation of the best material and somewhere that supplies it please.

Hello Phil,

I ended up using roller bearings:

3x11.8mm Rounded End Loose Needle Rollers from Simplybearing_uk as purchased on Ebay. I think they are £9.60 for 10.

No sign of any wear as yet, and my 2 3/4 is no slouch! It's the Zoom Zoom exhaust that helps.....

I hope this is useful to you.

Regards,

Ian

Thanks Ian, I think I'll try those.
I think I used spokes before, and wasn't happy with the results.

I use HSS drill bits. When making a new valve I buy a new HSS drill bit, drill the hole, then cut a pin off the chuck end of the drill with a thin cut-off wheel in the Dremel.
