EW350 Engine Query
« on: 25 Nov 2012 at 18:07 »
I have dismantled my EW engine and found when stripped a brass metering jet
lying loose in the bottom of the crankcase. I can see where it had come from - an
oil way between the crank case and timing side. What I am not clear on is what it does
or if there are any more parts to it? Would appreciate any help.

Regards  Colin

Hi,
Not sure what you are describing. Possibly the quill feed to the crankshaft? Can you post a picture of what you have?

Colin,

It does sound like the oil quill, as Oily Bloke suggests. If so, it is held up against the end of the crankshaft by a coil compression spring between the quill and the hex headed plug in the timing chest cover.

Thanks very much for both replies, Oil quill looks correct but it looks like
the spring is missing ( the cranks munched that i think ). Do you think its a special
spring, and I what does it do ?

Thanks again

Looks like part of the non return valve for the crankcase breather to me!! If it is, there should also be the valve - a thin steel disc somewhat smaller than the diameter of the thread on this part.

That is the part inside the front cylinder oil feed. On which the non return valve sits. A small shim steel disc held in place by a small light spring. Another one should exist in the boss at the base of the manual oil pump in the bottom of the fuel tank. It is possible that there is another in the oil pump in the timing chest but I cannot remember if there is one in there. Either way it shouldn't be where you found it!
Hope that helps.
