1926 EW 350-Crankshaft Conundrum

Hi,
I am currently in the process of removing the crankshaft from my EW as the gudgeon pin on the rear piston seized, made one of the rods not all that straight and broke a piston just for good measure. As I have never had the opportunity to delve quite so deeply into a Douglas before it is all new to me. Can anyone provide some advice on how to remove the timing gear from the crankshaft and are there any tricks to this.

Nik,

Due to the limited space between the back of the timing gear and the crankcase wall, you will need to make a gear puller. A picture of one can be seen in this post:

It is not recommended to try and pry the pinon off by jamming the blade of a screwdriver in from each side. The crankcase wall is quite thin behind the pinion and prone to prone to cracking, and usually the pinion is pressed on too tightly to make such an effort successful. 

In fact, it is not unusual to find the crankcase damaged where some previous mechanic tried to pull the crankshaft through the crankcase wall without removing the pinon, assuming the crankcase wall would do the job for them.

However with the proper puller, it should draw off straight without too much effort.

I found a Triumph crank pinion puller worked fine.
