C32 Speedo
« on: 19 Oct 2012 at 17:23 »
Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so please be gentle ;)
I'm a New Zealand lad, living in Germany and have just gotten my mitts on a beautiful C32 Bulldog!
Can anyone please tell me if they have fitted a speedo to one of these before? I assume it will run off the front hub??
If i could get some info on how and what type then that would be great :)

Cheers guys!

Rob,
Douglas made their own speedo drive in the early 30's. It fitted in the end of the front hub (opposite side to the brake drum), replacing the sheet metal dust cover. From memory, I think the ratio was 29:10. If you are a member, The London Douglas Motorcycle Club prewar spares scheme may be able to help with parts/details.
      Regards,
                     Eddie.

Thanks for that Eddie,
I'm not a member but i will definitely look into it!
I thought it would have had something to do with that cover...
Hopefully i can get my hands on a speedo drive as i'm sure that's the hardest part to find :)

Rob,

I was told once there were three different speedo gearbox ratios available, depending if a Cowley, Smiths, or Stewart instrument was fitted. You would think there would have been some sort of instrument standardization as to input ratio, but it would be wise to check before spending a lot of money.

The generally arrangement Eddie referred to can be seen in this post here:

Thanks Doug,

I see know that this is a popular topic :)  So ideally i should try and locate an old set?
Im wanting to join a few clubs and attended a few rallies next year (spring/summer) so it would be great to have my bike all set up for then :)

Thanks again!
