S6 Big End Bearings
« on: 16 Oct 2012 at 05:33 »
Can anyone help with where I might purchase 5/16" x 3/8" big end Roller Bearings for my S6 project?

Have exhausted my enquiries with our local bearing shops.

Any advice appreciated.

Jonathan,
I had similar problems when looking for rollers for a DT crank that I was trying to refurbish. I ended up having to grind down longer rollers (not so hard as it first sounds!). With regard to your S6 crank: 5/16 x 3/8 rollers are now very scarce (as you have found) but a company here in the UK can supply 8mm x 12mm rollers - these are 2 thou bigger than 5/16, so would give you the option of honing out the rods/ grinding the inner tracks. Shortening them to 3/8 is a bit tedious but quite easy. I made up a bush with an 8mm bore and an adjusting screw for the depth - with this held in the lathe chuck and a roller inserted in it, I then carefully applied an angle grinder to the end of the roller (with the lathe running at about 800 rpm). With a little practice, it's amazing how accurate this method can be. Having trimmed the rollers to length, I then used a fine flap wheel in a Dremel to polish the ends and restore the radius on the edge of the roller.
The crank I refurbished has now done over 2 seasons of sprinting without any ill effects - so I guess it has passed the test!!
If you go down this route - the company to contact is: Simply Bearings. They have a website where you can select the items you require and order on line.
     Hope this helps,
     Regards,
                 Eddie.

Thank you Eddie and Manfred.

Eddie, would you mind posting the Bearing Shop details please, as our bearing shops also don't stock 8 x 12 mm rollers.

I will compare prices and do what you did.  I have access to machinery to hone the rods etc.

Thanks all, have ordered 8mm x 12mm rollers.
I will shorten them and re-size the rods to suit.

I appreciate you advice.
