Tyre Choice Mk4
« on: 10 Feb 2012 at 16:56 »
Hi all.
Does anyone have experience of using the Avon Speedmaster and Safety Mileage combination on the Douglas Mk4 /5?
My concern is regarding the operation of the centre stand as the Safety Mileage comes in at 19 x 3.5 as opposed to the 19 x 3.25 originally fitted to my bike.  Unfortunately, I have removed both tyres so am unable to measure the ground clearance with bike on the stand!
One option is to go for a pair of Dunlop K70's, both at 19 x 3.25, but I quite like the ribbed front of the Avons - not that either will make any difference the way I ride!!

Hi,
Providing your stand is in good order, the 3.50 tyre should not cause any problems. However, quite a few Mark series machines suffer from the stand going too far forward to hold the wheels clear of the ground. This is usually caused by owners attempting to kickstart the bike while it is on the centre stand - resulting in the stand twisting the cross tube it is mounted on. This also results in it being almost impossible to remove the pivot bolt as it then fouls the bottom tubes of the frame.

         Regards,
                       Eddie.

Good morning.
Much obliged for info re stand - mine does seem to have a lot of movement so will check.
Just to clarify my situation, I bought the MK4 a while ago but quickly realised it would need an engine rebuild and attention to the gearbox. The frame etc had been painted to a reasonable standard and the cycle parts seem to have been restored.   The LDMCC in general and Dave in particular have given me a lot of support, and, along with Eddie and others on this forum, provided a mine of truly useful information.  Spares from the club have been forthcoming and although I have registered my appreciation directly to Pat and Sheila,  I think it appropriate to thank them publicly here on the forum.

Best regards

George
