wheel rims
« on: 05 Dec 2011 at 20:35 »
i have got 3 wheels for my 1912 2 3/4 . All have different rims. If i measure them as you would a well based rim thhhe two beaded edge rims measure 21 and 22 inch. The third is a well based rim measuring 22 inch which a bicycle tire fits. Now what size is most suitable for my motorbike? and where is a good place in the uk to buy rims and tires?  Neale

Hi Neale,
In November 1911 the new model 1912 Douglas was listed as having 2" Avon tyres: i.e. 26 x 2 beaded edge. In 1912 there was no standardisation of rim sizes, but a 26 x 2 rim is about 22 1/2" overall diameter and about 1.85" wide.
Now Ensign do a nice 26 x 2 tyre, but I'm not sure who would make this rim size. Many lightweight veterans these days run 26 x 2 1/2" BE tyres, which (confusingly) also fit on a 22 1/2" rim, albeit usually wider than the 26 x 2 item.
Vintage Rims in New Zealand (!) will do a 26 x 2 1/2" rim in Westwood (drop centre) pattern
http://www.vintagerims.com/Beaded_Edge_Vintage_Rims.html
and there are many 2 1/2" tyres to suit.
However the 1912 Doug is a delicate thing - it would be nice to do the original 26 x 2 wheels if you can locate suitable rims. Sorry I have no UK knowledge...
Cheers
Leon

Hi Neale
It maybe best to contact Vintage Rims at Waiau, just north of Culverton,  their web site suggests that they manufacture the westwood style rim in a variety of sizes.  Classic Tyres at Tauranga, [www.classic-tyres.co.nz] list both 26" x 2"  and 26" x 2 1/2"  tyres as being available locally here in NZ.

Hi all
Westwood section (well based) beaded edge rims for 26" x 2" tyres are available from the VMCC and are listed in their catalogue as are Ensign tyres to suit. They are expensive compared with the 2.1/2" rims probably due to the reduced demand for this size compared with the larger sizes. The VMCC catalogue can be viewed at www.vmccshop.com  Prices include P&P to UK but invite enquiry for overseas sales. I dare say that a telephone call or email to The VMCC to the number and address given in the website would enable you to ascertain the dimensions of the rims for sale. Chris
