Hi Daren
You are quite correct in your assumption that this is is the "Y" piece, part of the air cleaner system as used as an optional extra on some Mk models. The complete set includes a "banjo" casting that screws onto each carburettor with a washer and rubber ring in place of a bellmouth, a bent hose connecting each banjo to the "Y" piece. The "Y" piece clamps onto the filter element which is a large cylindrical steel container with an internal detachable steel mesh. This unit is supported by a bracket that is secured with the two screws that hold the top of the battery carrier to the gearbox.   Chris.

Daren,
There were 2 versions of the air cleaner system - one had steel connecting pipes clamped in and the other had pipes with rubber connecting sleeves. It looks as if you have the clamped in type banjos, but the other type 'T' piece.

Regards,
              Eddie.

Daren,
Plate 10 in the spares book shows an exploded view of the air cleaner assy. It just has an angle bracket to attach it to the 2 top battery carrier bolts.
  Regards,
                Eddie.
