Kevin,

The speedo was an add-on option, usually purchased from the dealer. So Cowley, Cooper-Stewart, Smiths, or any other maker of the day. Apparently not all used the same speedo gearbox ratio, and I understand there were three different gear sets available (the gearbox was manufactured by Douglas) depending on make of speedo fitted.

Kevin,

This is the arrangement of the speedo on the thirties Dougies, if you have not seen it before.

The speedometer drive gear shown in the sketch contributed above by Doug which fits most 1930s machines and replaces the right hand hub dust cap between the hub and fork leg is available to members from The LDMCC Pre-war Spares Scheme. The nuts to fit the gear which also fit some makes of Speedometer are also available to enable the drive cable to be made up.   Chris.

Kev,
I was told many years ago, that the correct ratio for a Cowey speedo on a machine with 19" wheels is 29/10.
                                     Regards,
                                                    Eddie.
