Hi, my name is Colombo Enrico and I think to be the first Italian who had never posted here… excuse for my English, I will try to improve it in the next days…

I bought a Douglas with the frame and the engine with the same number\code: T35/S/4457/3   , the vendor said me to be a Mark 3 , now, this evening, reading the forum and the Peter Carrick Douglas Book, I have a doubt: the exhaust pipes are to be UPSWEPT or DOWNSWEPT ?

My friend Claudio, a very well mechanic, has checked the bike and has said me which are the spare parts missing or broken: I have marked them in yellow on the plate of the Douglas Motor Cycles Maintenance Book 1948-1954, I need specially the 2 pistons , the rings and the pushrods. Also a barrel is broken in the bottom, can anyone tell me the better supplier for me?

Another question is about the colours: the Mark 3 were only blue/black or there were others liveries?

Thank you in advance for the answers.

Enrico

Welcome Enrico

You have come to the right place to get information on your Douglas! :o:

I suggest you look at the London Douglas Motor Cycle Club (they have a website) who are a very good source of spares and might also be able to give to interesting information about your specific machine!  It is a very good club for a Douglas owner and this site is a very good site for on-line advice and information.

No doubt others will be along soon to give you more advice, meanwhile, we would like to see pictures of your machine!

John

Hi Enrico,
Welcome to the website. Hopefully, you will soon join the London Douglas Motorcycle Club - then we can help you with spares, etc. for your bike. In the meantime, from your engine/frame number (T35/S/4457/3),you have a Mk 3 machine, which should have the downswept exhaust pipes with a cast alloy silencer under the gearbox. If the number had ended /S, it would have been a Mk 3 Sports with the upswept pipes and barrel silencers. There was only one colour scheme of blue/black for the Mk 3. The Mk 3 Sports had a similar livery but with a lighter shade of blue.
When you join the club, we will be able to provide new pistons and pushrods, and an advert in the club magazine will probably source a replacement barrel.
In the meantime, please post some photos of your bike - that will assist in identifying your needs (as there were detail changes year to year).
We look forward to hearing from you,
                                    Regards,
                                              Eddie.

Hi Enrico.
For your interest, the Douglas motorcycle you have numbered 4457 is a standard Mark 3 model and was one in a batch of 37 Mark 3 and Mark 3 Sports machines sent from the factory in Kingswood, Bristol to ARGENTINA on 19 August 1948
Regards, Reg.

Thank you with all my hearth for the warm welcome !!!

First of all excuse me for the delay to answer to your messages but, I pray you to see at which hour I have posted this night: in Italy are about the 03.45 a.m. of 04 th December… after I will go into the bed… but before I have to
Write here.

For KiwiJohn :  This is really not a very good site, I think it is the best…I feel quite at home…  in the next days I will inscribe myself to the L.D.M.C.C. , for the picture of my machine I’m shameful because it isn’t yet restored… I hope in the next weeks…

For Eddie: O.K., I have a Mark 3 standard model, for the L.D.M.C.C. I will send all is required not later than the end of this week.

For Daren W: tomorrow I wil see my friend mechanic and I will ask him for the bore, after I will post all the information about my spare parts missing.

For Reg : it’s right, I bought the Mark 3 in Argentina one year ago and the vendor says me to have another one to sell, to have these and others two bikes from him (from Argentina by sea the transport is very expensive and I wanted to save money in shipment) was very, very difficult… and in quite bad conditions. For exalple, the carburettors were fitted on the barrel WITH THE HAMMER !!!

Excuse me if I have to be concise but it’s very very late also for me.

I send you the photos, but I think it will be more delightful in the future…

Enrico
