Title: Dragonfly
Post by: Tonyone44 on 02 Jan 2020 at 16:45
Hello everyone and Happy, healthy New Year to all. I am restoring my second Dragonfly and need a camshaft idler gear. The one I have has a tooth missing. Can anyone help? Tony@cas-am.co.uk

I might have one, there are a bunch of extra gears in a box from the guy who I'm restoring a Fly.
I'll try and have a look through it tonight.

I'm looking for grab rails and a distributor cover. Miller ignition switch.

Missing teeth on camshaft idlers is quite common on Dragonflies. I have put it down to over-oiling of the timing gears. On the Dragonfly, the oil filter chamber traps too much oil - enough to cause a hydraulic lock between the meshing teeth - this is also exaggerated by the gears being wider than on previous models. The hydraulic lock strains the teeth to breaking point. My Dragonfly got through 2 idler gears at 4,000 mile intervals, until I drilled 2 drain holes in the back wall of the timing chest to let the excess oil return to the sump. The holes are positioned to control the oil level so that the teeth just dip into it. Since doing the mod, my engine has done another 35,000 miles without any further problems.
