Title: Not charging?
Post by: Graham prichard on 30 Jul 2015 at 18:03
Hi all, Mark doesn't seem to be charging at all amps go down below 4 with full beam on  when running same as when not running, what next???

Graham

First step: loosen dynamo clamps and take off the nut at the front so you can slide it back and decouple from drive.
Then take off regulator cover and close the cut-out contacts.
The dynamo should spin evenly if it's OK, and if the wiring to the battery is OK.
If it passes this test, suspect loss of residual magnetism in the field magnet - a common problem if the engine has not been run for a while.  Remedy often discussed on this list.

Cheers Ian I will try this  but did notice when try to get magnetism in field magnet wire wasn't getting hot, could battery life not be strong enough would 12 volt give more boost?? Many thanks

Graham,
Try connecting the live side of the battery to the 'F' terminal again, but this time with a bulb in circuit. The bulb should light (but may be a bit dim!). If it doesn't light, you a have a fault somewhere. Using the bulb as an indicator, touch it on the crankcase - it should light. If it doesn't, there is a wiring fault on the earth side of the battery. If it does light, try again with the bulb on the mag body, then again on the dynamo case, and finally on the 'F' terminal. If you get a light in all cases except the 'F' terminal, then the wiring fault is an internal one in the dynamo itself.

  Regards,
               Eddie.

Sounds like a good test to do, I will let you know how I get on
Cheers Eddie
