Title: oil pump?
Post by: tom hoek on 03 Feb 2012 at 10:38
Hello bikers
Have another question
You know what this is for oil pump?  its from a  350 cc Douglas A32 1932
engine.
And how it works?

And how high should the oil level in the crankcase?

see photos

Tom,

The pump and timing cover is suitable for the A31 and A32. It is a dry-sump system, so there is no oil level in the crankcase. There is a oil level in the timing chest, sufficient for the lower cam gear wheel to dip in. The level is set by a drilled hole in the back wall. Excess oil flows into the crankcase chamber and is scavenged to the compartment in the petrol tank.

The oil pump does not supply oil directly to the crankshaft. It supplies oil to a spray-bar that drips oil into the path of the connecting rods. Shallow grooves on the leading edge of the crankshaft center web lead the oil into the side of the connecting rob bearings.

The attached illustrations should demonstrate what is going on in the three-stage pump.

Regards,
-Doug
