Title: amal 5-116-s
Post by: saluki42 on 04 Aug 2021 at 10:19
Hi I have a specialist engineering firm trying to renovate / repair the 5-116-s up draft carburetor for my 34 Model Z and they have hit a problem. Two of the components they have need slight modification and they have no dimensions to work with. The two in question are the "needle jet holder" and the "Jet needle" itself. The company Exeter Engineering have come up with two solutions to get over this problem, firstly has anybody out there got any spares of these parts which they could accurately measure for us to give us a guide to the machining needed and secondly and I realise that this is very cheeky of me has anybody got any spare parts they could lend us so that they can be used as a pattern for the machining of my parts.
If somebody can lend me the parts I am prepared to leave a deposit with them for the safe return of these parts.

I know both options are a long shot but its either that or trial and error with machining which could be expensive.

Regards
Chris

Or, can you show a pic of these parts and where/why they need modification.

Chris,

Drawing for modifying a available 5/056 needle into a 5-135 needle in this post:

I also have a drawing for the needle jet 5-134:

Parts list illustration in this post might be of interest too.

Hi thanks for the very quick responses, Doug I'll pass the drawing on to engineers working on the carb and If you have that drawing of the Jet I think that could be very useful too. I will also ask for some photos of the parts they need to work on for clarification.

Hi again, the feedback from the engineering firm was that "the drawing was immensely useful", I think he was happy. The only other thing he is after at this stage are the details / drawing of the needle itself if anybody can help.

So far so good thanks so much.

Oh and I also just got the reconstructed induction casting back so almost there with a complete ready to run Model Z engine.

Hi Saluki
I had a batch of needles manufactured to the original drawings supplied by Doug Kephart for the updraft S6 carburettor a while back. These are I believe still in stock in the LDMCC spares scheme available to members only. If you are not a member they are also available from Martyn Bratby well known stall holder for carburettor spares at most autojumbles.
Chris.

There was a link to a post with the needle drawing provided.

Thanks Doug, viewed the original response on my phone, saw the link to the parts list but missed the one to the needle. All sorted now and the firm I'm using who although car restoration specialists deal with all types of carburetors have asked me to pass on their thanks for your help.
