Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

Hello Michel,

The procedure for uploading a photo to become your avatar is...

1. Open your Profile page by clicking on the Profile link above.

2. Click on the radio button next to "I will upload my own picture:"

3. Click on the "Browse" button to browse to the image on your PC.

4. Click on the "Change profile" button at the bottom of the page.

If you followed this procedure and the photo is not appearing, it's possible that there is some incompatibility between the source image and the resizing code that reduces it to the smaller size.

You could try shrinking it to about 500 pixels wide, save it in jpeg format, then try uploading it again.

Otherwise, please send your photos to the address shown in this topic and I will attach it for you and let you know what caused the problem.

Hello Michel,

Thank you for sending the photo of your EW. It's a fine looking machine. I too had trouble attaching it to your Profile. Here's what I did.

1. Tried reducing the photo to 400 pixels wide and uploading it. This didn't work.

2. Tried reducing it to 200 pixels wide and uploading it. This also didn't work.

3. Reduced the width of the photo to exactly 120 pixels wide - the exact width of a displayed avatar. This worked.

So, for some reason, the software that automatically resizes large photos to the correct 120 pixel width, is not working properly. Or, there is some incompatibility with this particular photo. To find out which it is, I'll need to do some more testing. I'll post back when I have an answer.

There's a larger version posted below so others can see your machine.

Michel,

I have done some testing and found two problems that were causing your photo upload to not work properly.

1. There was something wrong with the automatic resizing software. Turning some settings off and on again seemed to clear the problem.

2. The original photo you were uploading was too large for the automatic resizing process to handle successfully. It was 3872 x 2592 pixels in size and had a file size of 4MB.

After clearing the problem with the automatic resizing software, I was able to upload various photos which were successfully resized into avatars. The uploaded photos were all less than 750 pixels wide and had a file size of 150KB or less. I'm not able to specify exact upper limits for photos as they may vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection and server settings made by the Web hosting company which are out of my control.

However all photos uploaded to become avatars are resized to a maximum width or height of 120 pixels. So to ensure a successful upload and resizing operation, it is best if the original photo is reduced prior to upload - preferably to say 640 pixels wide or less.

If anyone has further difficulty with uploading a photo to become their avatar, please send your photos to the address shown in this topic and I will attach it for you.
