Copper gasket dimensions
« on: 19 Sep 2011 at 06:43 »
I am going to replace the copper head gaskets on my E28 (EW600). Does anyone know what thickness the sheet should be ? Also, were they originally just a ring that fits inside the head bolts or do the have holes for the bolts ? I also notice the LDMCC has them listed for S6 - are they common between the models ? (would save a bit of work  :))

Yes Ian the gasket on the E28 and E 29 is just a continuous ring the shape of a piston ring about 1/16 thick and fits within the head studs. The S 6 gaskets are flat copper asbestos  gasket with holes for head studs.

Not sure which would be the easy way to make either from sheet or plumbers copper rod which is  easily joined at the ends and the ring then flattened very tricky whichever way.

Maybe laser cut could be a way too.

Hope that helps somewhat and yes forgot to mention. My mate Des loaded the OC on the ute yesterday with the first task to make the tank from the patterns you supplied and what we think it should look like. Then we hope to finish it off. It will be great to see it finished after resting in the shed for the past 30 years unfinished.

Ian,

3.312 o.d. x 2.938 i.d. (or nice fit on spigot) x 0.062 thick copper. The originals from my F28 vary from 0.057 to 0.063 thick, which is why the were replaced by rings cut from aluminum sheet!

Ian,

Well, never got so far as running it... But I did also use aluminum sheet on the Mark 3 Sports, after I got tired of blowing out the modern cardboard gaskets, and that has lasted over fifteen years.
