Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

General Douglas Discussion / Re: MkV points adjustment
Last post by eddie - Yesterday at 20:28
According to the handbook, the timing should be set at 36 degrees before TDC (fully advanced). That works out as 9/32" before TDC if working with a depth gauge through the spark plug hole. When setting the timing remember that these were the ideal figures for the fuel available at the time the bikes were built. With our modern fuel, it may be better to advance it a few more degrees, then play with the advance/retard lever until you find the 'sweet spot', then note the position of the lever.

  Regards,
                Eddie.

Brian,

Broken ring(s) or worse a poorly retained gudgeon pin that has come adrift and grooved the cylinder. Either way you want to investigate immediately.

General Douglas Discussion / Re: MkV points adjustment

Yes, on all the magdynos I have met, there is a little bump on the points unit taper that goes into almost a keyway,
so if you wiggle it into position it locates back to the same timing. I'm assuming the Mk V is no different.

If it runs, the timing can't be too far out ?  A strong light and a mirror may assist with whats going on.
Not knowing the Mk V timing marks, can't assist with that side of things.
Timing cover off time, to reset stuff ?

I've found using a strobe timing light can assist, considerably, if somewhere suitable to pencil/stamp a mark
is available - or already factory done ?. The pickup just clips over the plug wire, and an independent battery
powers the plot.

I recently had my engine overhauled on my 1926 EW 350 and the engine was running fine until recently when lots of white/grey smoke and oil started coming out of the exhaust to the extent that I had to shut the engine down as the whole road outside my house was disappearing in the smoke. I think the engine might have a broken Piston ring as the oil is getting onto the plugs.  Has any members experienced anything similar and if so what is the cure.

Thanks Ron. So you can remove the points and they will go back in exactly the same position? I think the timing is out a little anyway because the advance/retard has little effect. I bought feeler gauges which are angled at the ends but it's still difficult to see
