Hi, after observing how popular the Australian Douglas following has become on Facebook! We have decided to start a new UK based group.

Good for chatting and being tracked, but not really a good format for information exchange? Much of Facebook is inaccessible to those who don't sign up, and even the all-conquering Google search seems to collapse under the "long stream" format where yesterday is not worth remembering as it slides off the bottom of the page.

Funny, too, that there is a perceived need for competing Facebook pages on a topic as specialised as Douglas motorcycles?

But do enjoy if that's your thing.

Yes,
      Leon, it does seem that the 'official Douglas' websites have suffered since the introduction of the Facebook pages, and as you say, it is almost impossible to trace your way back through 'Facebook' if you want to look up a certain piece of information. In my opinion, this forum has served the 'Douglas' community well, and is still the best site for gaining or spreading reliable information between dedicated Douglas enthusiasts.

I agree that the forum is a better information source but I don't carry my PC with me like my phone!

Thanks for your supportive comments gentlemen - it's always good to get feedback, whether positive or negative, both are equally useful. As Vitesse points out, phones have become a popular tool for browsing the Web in the past few years. Fortunately, the core software we use has had a significant upgrade to handle phone sized screens and image attaching much more elegantly than this current version. I am really keen for us to move to this platform ASAP. But the software has taken a while to mature and in its standard form, may have presented a few hurdles for some members. So the past few months have been spent full time trying to get it into shape for us here. More on that later - hopefully at the end of this month.

The fundamental difference is Facebook was designed to post lots of pictures with some supporting text, and forums were designed to post lots of text with some supporting images. Of course you can put a lot of images or text into either one if you persevere.

You certainly can use the Douglas Motorcycle Forum on a phone/mobile device:



...but you have to zoom in (each page initially loads with the full page width) and the problem of typing on a phone/mobile device still remains.

I am member of several other Facebook Groups relating to old tractors, hit & miss farm engines, and machinist sites. Presumably they were setup there as the tools provided by Facebook make it relatively easy for individuals to create and manage a group without any IT skills. But yes, trying to search for anything over a year old is a trial. To me, they are not the most ideal site for technically oriented subjects because everything is lumped into one bucket; no individual boards to sort/organize topics by subject. However, that is not what Facebook Groups were designed for, it is just what folk have adapted it to.

I'm with the above. This is a great site for information and the skill of some members helps the lack of in others.
As for you guys who run it - hats off and deep bow.
I don't use Facebook because you don't know what information they are collecting behind the scenes and yes I do reject cookies unless they are for sale in a shop.

      I fully agree with Eddie, Doug, Peter, Leon, Ian et al.

The forum is very easy to navigate, very friendly and doesn't fall off the bottom of the page !! - And I don't need to look for my stronger specs to read it.
