Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

General Douglas Discussion / G31 kick starter mecanism
Last post by hoejmark - 28 Mar 2025 at 10:37
Hi All
The Stubbekøbing Motorcycle- and Radio Museum here in Denmark restores a very fine G31 and ask me a question about the kickstarter Mecanism.

The threaded hole at the end of the sprockets teeth - what is the purpose of this threaded hole? Is there anyone who can help?

Regards

I was speaking to them while collecting some parts from the last auction, they are more car people than bikes, but are trying to be helpful. I think if you emailed either of them a request for more photos they wouldn't hesitate to get them for you. Also this is apparently lot 2 of 3 of the Eric Bourn collection, believe May was the last auction. These are parts they found buried further in the back of the shed since the first auction. The last auction will be mostly small pieces from memory.

Doningtons are auctioning more (and unsold ?) of his Duggie stuff + others.
This BTH gennie for an EW caught my eye.

I do wish their otherwise very capable photographer would photo ALL of the front and back sometimes though....

If BOTH plugs are oiling up, then its not just a broken ring or gudgeon pin problem.
Draining the crankcase to see how much comes out sounds like a good 1st step.

Here is a link to a post with pics of the standpipe.

https://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index.php?msg=30801

It sets the oil level in the timing chest and drains excess away to the primary chain. It is also the engine vent. I have seen these mistakenly blanked off to 'fix' oil leaks.

Thanks Eric, thats just what I need. Another question, this bike I'm working on for my friend doesn't have a primary chain guard, would there be any chance of you taking some photos of yours to give me an idea of what I need to make.

                  Cheers

Hi Eric, Thanks

I was meaning the other sprocket on the gearbox, the one the primary chain drives, any chance you could count the number of teeth on that one.

                           Cheers
