The 2004 Bay to Birdwood Run *New pics.

The 2004 Bay to Birdwood Run was another great success for South Australia yesterday (26 September 2004) - it's a bi-annual event that has become one of the worlds' greatest historic motoring events, alternating yearly with the Birdwood Classic both having their beginnings in 1980. The Run is for motor vehicles of pre-1964 vintage, the Classic is for vehicles built after this date and at least 30 years old. This year the event attracted a near record of over 1450 entries including more than 200 motorcycles, many of which were driven, ridden or trailered from other states within Australia.

Both the Run and the Classic start with a huge assembly at Adelaide Shores (Barratt Reserve, West Beach) and travels 75 kilometres through the Adelaide North-Eastern suburbs then through scenic hills countyside to the site of the National Motor Museum in the Adelaide Hills at Birdwood. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people lined the route, many taking the chance for a roadside picnic, to watch this major event filled with veteran, vintage and classic motor cars, trucks, and motorcycles, as it drove before them.

This year, I entered my recently restored 1950 D1 (Rigid Frame) Bantam BSA, having ridden my Douglas T35 in the events since 2001 (two Classics and one previous Run). However, Douglas, never-the-less, was well represented. There were no less than 7 entries, including, a 1920 2 3/4, a 1923 TS 23/4, a 1929 E29, a 1932 H32 Mastiff sidecar outfit, a 1948 T35 (similar to my own) and two 1948 T35 Mark 3 Sports models.  The following pictures relate...
