Came across this while looking for something else. Not sure where Phil Irving was in December 1950, but the article is from the Melbourne newspaper "The Age". Phil lived in Melbourne for many years - he was the patron of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club of Victoria when I joined c1980.

I wonder if he was tempted to sneak in "Feels a bit gutless compared with a Vincent"?

In 1950, there wouldn't be too many bikes where this didn't apply !
An Ariel 1000cc Squaffer, maybe, can't say I've ridden one nor seen reports of huge torque ?

Phils autobiography, great read, could probably say as to his whereabouts.
Not immediately to hand here though.
He sure worked on a lot of projects/developments.
And cast a wise eye over many.

That undamped rear suspension sounds a little problematic.
Was that ever improved ?
