Old Photos

I thought you guys may enjoy the photo and arguing over identifying the bikes.
I'll attach the main one and then an enlargement times two.
What are the two Douglas models please?
I know the far right bike and the second from the left are Douglas but what is the one in the middle?
This is a photo from Waitaki Boys High School in Oamaru where I work as  music teacher. By the uniform we think late 1920's possibly early 1930's.
We also think the bike on the left is an early Indian perhaps Powerplus?

The middle machine is a 1912 Douglas, with a Rover next to it. The other machine is indeed an Indian Powerplus with the Hendee IOE engine.
I would think this photo would be from the 20s - all the bikes are at latest 1915 manufacture

Thank you. Are the other Douglas a similar age?

Hi there

The Douglas on the extreme right hand end is a 3 1/2 hp or very early 4 hp machine certainly before 1916 period when the front forks were reportedly changed to welded construction so would date in the 1915 period at the latest as suggested. The Douglas 2nd from the left is probably 1913 or 1914 2 3/4 hp

And the Indian on the left looks to be a c1914 two-speeder - a couple of years before the side-valve Powerplus appeared. The Rover is similar vintage, and the 3 1/2 Doug seems to have a Bosch magneto, so probably not later than 1915. All-in-all, you'd be thinking the photo was WW1 era rather than 1920s.

Are there names for the riders?

Leon

Thanks guys.
I have no names and the photos had been removed from the rector's album so no date either. It would be unlikely that they would own new machines and that was why we thought later than WW1. The uniform also dates it about then. I'll put the photo on the Old Boys site and see if they come up with anything.
Thanks again.
Stephen

Can't believe I didn't notice the 3 1/2hp! And you are right Leon, the Bosch magneto dates it as early production. And I've now learnt that not all Indians with rear springing were called a Powerplus  :)
