Have you tried the new Drafts feature yet? I just lost a long message today and learned my lesson. It is a good idea to save a draft of any long post you are writing. You can then just keep writing and keep saving a draft, knowing you have a backup if there is a glitch. The draft is automatically deleted when you post the message.

Other pics I have seen show a engine number stamped on the top of the crankcase, as per motorcycle practice. These pics are of an engine for sale on ebay a few years back:






Now that you pointed it out, 22590 would be a part number dating to around 1942. I would have thought by then they had ceased using the detachable pocket valve heads by then and moved on to the alloy plate heads. Unless parts have been swapped about.

So, Doug, is 22590, cast in, the engine number? If so, how did they do it? Was there something mechanical that progressed in the mold? I have a c1900 MMC tricycle engine where the engine number was cast in, but the numbers were in the hundreds and presumably they were updated by hand for each new casting.

These were used in the Douglas industrial trucks. There is not much info available on these. They started production around 1926 and continued until after WW2. Most using this type engine were 600cc. They were based on the 600EW motorcycle engine. There is a later variation seen with much the same crankcase but with cylinders fitted with detachable aluminum heads. So yours would be the earlier type that looked more like the 600EW (though not exactly the same cylinders), but when they changed over to the plate heads I do not know. For the motorcycles it was around 1930-32, but the industrial engines likely lagged some way behind.

I have not heard of anyone comparing the parts interchangeability. I have a 600EW, and looking at it I speculate it will not be much more than things like cams, tappets and conrods. While the crankshaft is likely the same design, I would not be surprised if the main shafts were different to suit; particularly a longer one on the timing side for that right angle drive. Also, the industrial engines usually persevered with cast iron pistons long after the cars and motorcycles switched to aluminum.

The photos and the description are a great help Doug. When I removed the timing cover one of the pump fastening screws had come out and was loose in the bottom of the timing chest. I wonder if the missing screw was allowing an air leak in the joint between the pump body and the timing cover.

All the oil galleries are clear and the pump looks in good condition. Will see if all is well when reassembled.

Some advice welcome as I cant quite nail this one down.

Can anybody assist in identifying the vintage, capacity and application for this stationary engine I have recently come into possession of?

Do they share any common components with the motorcycle engines of the time?

I have a lot of post war Douglas parts on my stall A1 at Founders day Stanford Hall in Leicestershire, UK.  on Sunday 21st July. gearboxes,forks,wheels etc I must clear my Garage
