2 3/4 half time pinion retaining nut
« on: 01 Apr 2022 at 04:50 »
Hi folks, its so long since I have had the 2 3/4 completely apart my memory is not good. Is the nut that holds the pinion to the crankshaft reverse thread ? The one with the ball and spring it it. I cant for the life of me get it to move.

Hi Ian,

Pretty sure from memory (and mine is not that good also!) that it is normal right hand thread i.e. undo anti clockwise. Will double check later for you when I have a chance to look in the shed. They should be tight-ish as if they come undone they act like a cutter and can make  a neat hole in the timing cover. Maybe lok-tite has been applied in the past so a little heat might be required to soften it?

cheers

Ian

Thanks - just managed to get it out - impact driver works ! It was a RH thread.

Mine did that cutting of the timing cover many years ago thus how tight I put it in !

just pulled mine off today, easy to undo, it fell off and had started to cut timing cover, ball and spring? mine had neither, not in the cases, its a air release valve? why? for what? is it necessary, i'm thinking not because obviously my bike never had it?

It’s pretty important as it ensures oil will mist through into the timing case

and also creates a partial vacuum in the crankcase which assists in drawing oil from the tank!
