Hopefully not a silly question, but unless I am missing the point ( or parts, although none shown on Bert Pol’s diagram), what is the purpose of the 2 in sliding cover on the central plunger rod.? Is it as simple as just to keep from pulling the plunger up too far which I would have thought the compressed spring would do anyway.? Ta Alan

The tubular body of the pump has a bleed hole back to the tank (just below the top thread). The spacer tube gives a positive stop when you lift the plunger, then any small amount of oil that has got past the washer, gets returned to the tank (rather than spilling over the top of the tank).
