1950 MK 4 side or center stand
« on: 31 Oct 2015 at 01:20 »
I have just acquired a 1950 Mark 4, generally in good condition except for a broken center stand.  Is there a source for replacement center stand, or side stands?  Also, I am in Asheville, NC, and am interested to meet other Douglas owners in the region. Thanks, Will

Welcome!
You say the center stand is broken - does that mean you could have it welded by someone who does aluminum?  Probably a lot easier than getting one from the London Douglas Motorcycle Club.  They won't sell parts to North Americans  - their insurance company knows we will sue them if the slightest thing goes wrong.
Anyway, a Mk on a center stand (especially the narrow version) will fall over at the slightest provocation.
So a side stand might be best - I've seen a solution using a  93-HONDA-CBR600 side stand
- see http://www.ebay.com/itm/370839840158?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
There are some other Douglas owners in Eastern US.  If you don't hear from them on this forum I could give you some pointers.

Will,

I am not quite so far up the coast as Ian is, being in SE Pennsylvania.

I have a Mark 3 Sports, for which I got a replica narrow center stand from The LDMCC years ago before the embargo. I can attest to Ian's comment that they tip over easily with the original style center stand! Eventually I welded on wings and add little to the height to try and make it more stable, but on soft ground I find it more reliable to lean the bike against a tree, fence, or a wall!

Originally the bikes were not fitted with a side stand, and no provision was made for that option. So various folk have exercised their ingenuity to adapt mounting points to add a prop stand. There have been examples of such posted on this forum.

Will, scroll down to "sidestand on T35 models" (11th Sept). I posted a couple of pictures. If you want any further details/dimensions, PM me with your email address & requirements. I'll do my best to help out.
Dave.
