Brake drum adjustment screws

Very simple question, what material were they originally made from?  The ones fitted to my machine are brass with the a/f being very close to the outer diameter of the thread and a locking nut, but they don't look original.  The reason I ask is that im just about to make some new ones for this:

All the ones I have seen (perhaps two dozen from 1926 to '36) are steel, with steel jam nuts.
