Dragonfly Kick Start
« on: 27 Apr 2012 at 09:35 »
Hello,
Can anybody advise what the probable cause of the kick start slipping could be?
it does not always slip but i am sure this is not correct and wondered if the bevel gear could be worn.
The engine was supposed to have been fully restored some years back with little use since so could another possibility be 'incorrect assembly'?
many thanks
Chris

Chris,
The kickstart ratchet is mounted on a sleeve on the back end of the layshaft. Sometimes this sleeve gets swollen if the nut is overtightened - thus preventing the ratchet from dropping back into engagement. Having said that, if the kickstart engages occasionally, I would be inclined to live with it. If your bike has been laid up, it might just be a bit 'gummed up', and with use, should free up and operate correctly.
      Regards,
                  Eddie.
